Doctoral and postdoctoral research opportunities

Your inquiry about a research opportunities at our institute is very much appreciated. Nevertheless, since we receive a lot of inquiries about research opportunities, it is essential that you provide the relevant information for us to be in the position to evaluate and to answer the inquiry request properly. This site provides you a guide to prepare the inquiry.

If you are interested in a doctoral position, note that doctoral students in our group are typically hired as part of funded research projects. If such a doctoral position is available, it is announced on the TUM job opportunities website and elsewhere. Occasionally, we accept doctoral students bringing their own funding (e.g. through a fellowship or external doctoral students working at other research institutions). If you have funding and are interested in becoming a PhD student in our group, please send an email to the secretary of the institute (zg.gbft@ed.tum.de) with the following information:

  • CV / certificates, academic records, practical experience and list of publications
  • recommendation letter of Diplom-/Master thesis supervisor
  • Diploma / Master thesis and/or scientific publications (copies or links)
  • short statement (max. 2 pages) indicating research topics and interests, possible research plan, expertise for experimental and theoretical research and teaching experience
  • Envisioned funding source

If you are interested in postdoctoral opportunities and you are intending to apply for a German funding (e.g. Humboldt fellowships, DAAD scholarships, TUM postdoctoral fellowships) please send an email to the secretary of the institute (grundbau@bv.tum.de) with the following information:

  • CV / certificates, academic records, practical experience and list of publications
  • recommendation letter of doctoral supervisor / research supervisor
  • selected publications and doctoral thesis (copy or links)
  • research program (max. 4 pages) including
    • research topic
    • importance of the research
    • research goals
    • scientific method
  • required research resources (laboratory, field tests, hardware, software, personal, etc.)
  • teaching experience, work with students, topic of possible lectures
  • envisioned funding source
  • planned duration

Please consider that the access to German funding for postdoctoral research is reserved to candidates with outstanding academic records and high research potential. 

If you are interested in a short-term stay as a visiting scholar, postdoc or doctoral student, note that you must provide your own funding for travel and accommodation. Funding may be available from DAAD. The minimum stay is 3 months. To apply, send an email to the secretary of the institute (zg.gbft@ed.tum.de) with the following information:

  • CV / certificates, academic records, practical experience and list of publications
  • recommendation letter of your supervisor
  • Doctoral, Diploma, Master thesis and/or scientific publications (copies or links)
  • short statement (max. 2 pages) indicating the intend of your stay
