12/10/2013 - Seismic monitoring of bedrock permafrost accepted for the Journal of Geophysical Research

Michael Krautblatter and Daniel Draebing had their most recent manuscript accepted for publication in the Journal of Geophysical Research - Earth Surface.

By carefully measuring changes in the speed of sound waves travelling through a partially-frozen rock slope, Michael and Daniel were able to identify the boundary between frozen and unfrozen bedrock to a depth of more than 10 m. They made repeated measurements over the period of a year, and were able to observe a migration of the permafrost zone within the ridge, located beneath the Rothorn (3259 m) in the central Swiss Alps. The online edition of the article should be available in a few months. The pre-press version of the article is available here.
