City-scale solutions for the energy use of shallow urban subsurface resources – Bridging the gap between theoretical and technical potentials

Jannis and Fabian teamed up with colleagues to assess the theoretical and technical geothermal potentials in the city of Basel. They showed how quantitative methods on a scientific basis can support thermal management strategies of shallow groundwater. This was accomplished by providing solutions for an energy potential assessment on the city-scale and for selected city quarters. In addition, the suitability of “active” (open-loop systems) and “passive” (thermally activated building elements) geothermal applications has been compared by feasibility indicators.
